What is The Shakti Mat used for?

The Shakti Mat is used as a wellness tool for overall health and v­itality. Most commonly it is used to support deep sleep, healthy circulation, relaxation of tense muscles, relief from stress, relaxation, and general vitality. These benefits are accessible through the principles of acupressure, all within the comfort of your home.

How do I know it works?

Acupressure is a long-standing and well trusted practice from Eastern roots. While this practice is reasonably new to the Western world, it dates back 2,000 years and is now adopted by reputable practitioners around the world. The Shakti Mat mimics this ancient technique to reproduce the benefits and make the practice of acupressure more widely available. What does it feel like?

When using The Shakti Mat, thousands of spikes apply pressure to your skin and muscles. If you’re like most, this experience can be uncomfortable and prickly at first. This will last a couple of minutes before a tingly sensation occurs, similar to deep heat, as the area warms. Discomfort then evaporates, muscles start to feel relaxed, and tension eases. This process can lead to feelings of bliss, and a state of such deep relaxation you may even nod off to sleep.

As humans, we all have different sensitivity to pain. For some people adjusting to The Shakti Mat can take just a couple of minutes, while for others it can take a couple of sessions. Over time, you will adjust to the initial discomfort, as your body learns to respond more readily to the pressure applied by the Mat.

How do I use it?

The Shakti Mat works on contact. When you place the Mat against your body, the spikes exert pressure on your skin. For your first session, start by applying the Mat to your neck, shoulders, back, or feet, as these areas are the most commonly affected by tension. However, any area of your body can be targeted. There is no limit for time or frequency of a Shakti session, and it is completely normal to fall asleep on the Mat. We recommend you aim for 15 minutes or more to experience the full acupressure effect. For your first few sessions, you can wear a thin t-shirt, or place a pillow case over your Mat while your body adjusts. However, bare skin is best to experience the full Shakti sensation. Use your Mat on any surface. Common places include in bed, on the floor, on a seat, or on a couch.

What are the differences between The Shakti Mat colours?

The Shakti Mat range varies in intensity based on the number of spikes. Contrary to what you might think, the fewer spikes the Mat has, the more intense the effect. This is because your body weight is distributed over fewer points, resulting in a more intense experience.

Products in order of intensity:

The Shakti Light (Yellow) has 8,000 spikes and is recommended for those who are sensitive to pressure, or seeking a light acupressure experience.

The Shakti Original (Orange, Black, or Green) has 6,000 spikes and is the Mat we recommend to 90% of people. If you don't meet the description of the Light or Advanced Mats, then this is a great place to start!

The Shakti Advanced (Indigo) is a step up for all the Shakti veterans out there looking to intensify their Shakti experience. The Advanced has the least number of spikes (only 4,000). Try the Advanced Mat if you have a strong pain threshold, enjoy deep tissue massages, or have been using the Original Mat for 6 months or more.

Product Concerns

Can The Shakti Mat help with back pain, insomnia, headaches and other medical conditions?

We make no medical claims, but many people find it helps them in different ways. We recommend you take advice from a doctor on whether they recommend it to you. If you’re worried The Shakti Mat isn’t right for you, then feel comfortable knowing you can send it back, or exchange it within 60 days.

Will my weight affect my Shakti experience?

We find it’s the person's level of skin sensitivity that determines what they feel, not their weight. So no matter what your weight is, you can use the Mat.

Can I use The Shakti Mat while pregnant?

We do not recommend use of the Shakti Mat to women who are pregnant. This is because certain acupressure points can be used to induce labour. Always consult your medical professional before using the Mat, if you are pregnant.

Can my child use The Shakti Mat?

We do not recommend that children use the Shakti Mat due to the sharpness of the spikes.

Can I use The Shakti Mat with a medical condition?

Do not use The Shakti Mat or Accessories if you have any of the following conditions:

Coagulation issues, or if you are using anti-coagulant medication. The Shakti Mat can affect circulation and therefore can not be recommended to people with circulation and/or clotting issues.

Epilepsy - the concern is that a person may have a seizure while on the mat.

Significant skin damage in the area of use - skin conditions can be aggravated by The Shakti Mat. This includes skin damage, pronounced skin inflammation, large papillomas, or moles.

Fever or other acute illness

Cardiovascular conditions


Neuropathy that has resulted in loss of sensation or sensory impairment

Pregnancy - acupressure points are used sometimes to induce labour

If you have any other medical condition or disease, we recommend you consult your physician before using this product. If you are, or are planning to become pregnant, consult your physician prior to use.

Warnings of use

Contains sharp spikes - use with care and only as directed.
Keep out of reach of pets and children.
Small parts may pose choking hazard.

What do the symbols mean?

The name Shakti and the symbols used, are to represent the Vedic culture that The Shakti Mat arose from.

The word ‘Shakti’ in Sanskrit is a feminine principle, and symbolises empowerment, abundance and change. It is dedicated to the women who make the Mats by hand in our Charity workshop in India.

The ‘Om’ symbol next to the word Shakti on the mat is mostly associated in the West with yoga, meditation and mindfulness practices. It is a mystical and sacred syllable that is used in Hinduism and Buddhism.

The ‘Sri Yantra’ symbol that is on the back of The Shakti Mat is a mystical diagram that means ‘holy instrument’. The Sri Yantra is considered to be the tool for obtaining and fulfilling all worldly desires and for material manifestation. This can be through increasing our focus and by clearing our minds so that we may see our goals clearly.

Your order will be shipped from New Zealand with a DHL Express Worldwide 1-2 working day delivery service. Please note the delivery time frame begins on the day after we dispatch the item/s, and excludes non-metro areas. Please allow an extra 1-3 days for rural delivery.

Do you ship internationally?

Do you ship to APO/FPO addresses?

Unfortunately, we cannot ship to APO/FPO addresses. We exclusively use DHL Express as our shipping carrier. USPS is the only shipping carrier that can deliver to APO/FPO addresses, therefore we are unable to ship to customers at these addresses. Please consider entering an appropriate alternative postal address when you place your order.

I need to change my address

Once an order has been placed, it is processed within 24 hours of being received (excluding weekends). After this point we are unable to make any changes to an address. Email us on if the address you entered is incorrect.

Changes to your order are unable to be made once your order has been fulfilled.

If there has been an error in your order, please contact us via and we will send out the correct item you ordered along with a return slip + courier bag for you to return any incorrect items.

An item is missing from my order

I didn’t receive a Happiness Bag with my Shakti Mat

All Happiness Bags are sold separately from our Shakti Mats and can be purchased for $5 in the shop section of our website.

A spike fell off my Mat

Due to the handmade nature of our product, this can happen. However, it’s an easy fix! If a spike has become unattached and is missing, please give us an email on and we will arrange replacement spikes for you ASAP.

The Shakti product I want is sold out

All our products are handmade, so arrival times can vary, but the product you're after is likely to be due in soon. Simply enter your email on the product page, to be notified as soon as the product is available.

Returns & Exchanges

Can I return my Shakti Mat?

Unhappy with your purchase? No worries! You can return it free of charge for a refund within 60 days of receiving your order, provided the goods are in the same condition as when you received them. The refund is the full cost of the Shakti products being returned, excluding shipping.
To return your mat, please email our support team and they will sort out a pre-paid return shipping label.

Please include a note with your name and order number and reason for return. Once the item is received and processed at our warehouse, we will refund you the full price of the product within 5 working days.

My Shakti Mat is the wrong intensity, can I exchange it? 

If you find The Shakti Mat you ordered is too light, or too intense, you may exchange it for another Mat provided the goods are in the same condition as when you received them*. When returning the Mat, include a note with your name and order number, as well as the item you wish to exchange for (this item must be of equal product value). We will then send out the exchange product within 10 working days of receiving it back, provided it is in stock.
