Will it hurt? Yes. But only for a little in the beginning.
Each spike responds to tension in your body, so more tension = more sensation. The initial “Ouch!” you feel activates your body’s pain response and tells it to send happiness hormones and pain-relief chemicals to the area you’re targeting. If those spikes aren’t sharp enough—or you’re beyond relaxed already—you won’t feel much.
After a few minutes, the tingling sensation fades into a deep, relaxing warmth. The redness is purely a circulation boost. You might even fall asleep.

The pillow is great for relaxing before bed. I am still getting used to the feeling. However, I find the pillow less painful than the mat. I’m going to keep using it. I have noticed more restful sleep after laying on the pillow for about 10 min.

Bought this as part of a mat/cushion bundle - it's the same spikes as on the mat but on a soft cushion. To be honest, I've struggled a bit with it compared to the mat - find it comparatively difficult to get a comfortable head position, and as a result I now just lie on the mat instead with a normal pillow. That said, it's likely far more to do with my physiology than the product itself, and someone else may have a very different experience., and I'm still using the cushion, just for my feet instead when sat down in a home office (which also works well).
