Will it hurt? Yes. But only for a little in the beginning.
Each spike responds to tension in your body, so more tension = more sensation. The initial “Ouch!” you feel activates your body’s pain response and tells it to send happiness hormones and pain-relief chemicals to the area you’re targeting. If those spikes aren’t sharp enough—or you’re beyond relaxed already—you won’t feel much.
After a few minutes, the tingling sensation fades into a deep, relaxing warmth. The redness is purely a circulation boost. You might even fall asleep.

In my experience the mat hurts my shoulder blades everytime. It does feel like a stress reliever after getting up, the initial session made my back itch. I started at 5min eventually to 20min sessions.

I waited and waited to purchase the mat and pillow because I was afraid they wouldn't be worth the money. So far they have been well worth it. I struggle with mild-slightly more severe tension in my neck and shoulders which results in frequent tension headaches. I also struggle with some amount of insomnia so I hoped this would address both of those. So far it has helped significantly with my tension, even taking care of a full-on headache without any painkillers (which is unusual for me to resolve it without ibuprofen); I used it twice in one day and it took the edge off my headache the first time and dealt with it almost completely the second time I used it later in the day. So far I haven't noticed a definite difference in my sleep from it but it absolutely helps revitalize and reenergize me on the days I am suffering from lack of sleep! It is painful but is a very doable pain in my opinion, it is 20 minutes of self-care I look forward to daily, and although I've only had it for a few weeks now, I already see improvements and look forward to continuing to use it.
