Will it hurt? Yes. But only for a little in the beginning.
Each spike responds to tension in your body, so more tension = more sensation. The initial “Ouch!” you feel activates your body’s pain response and tells it to send happiness hormones and pain-relief chemicals to the area you’re targeting. If those spikes aren’t sharp enough—or you’re beyond relaxed already—you won’t feel much.
After a few minutes, the tingling sensation fades into a deep, relaxing warmth. The redness is purely a circulation boost. You might even fall asleep.

I was not prepared for how beloved this mat would be in my life. The first ten minutes were hard and then I was overwhelmed by euphoria. Now I have a bit of a tolerance to it and immediately feel relaxed when I lay on it. Perhaps it was luck but the week after I bought it I strained my shoulder. I don’t injure easily but my neck and shoulder were in terrible shape and I spent the weekend laying on my mat on and off and it was the only thing that brought me relief. Thank you!

Wow! I’m not going to lie, the first 2 minutes were pretty uncomfortable and I was wondering how long I could endure it but then the discomfort subsided and was replaced with warmth and relaxation which lasted several hours afterwards. It’s still an initial shock but I absolutely love it.

I went full in and bought the level 3 mat bundled with the pillow. Absolutely love the mat, just wish it was slightly wider and longer so I could use it from head to toe (or neck to toe since I have the pillow) including being able to rest my arms and hands on it . That said it’s a very high quality mat and folds away neatly when not in use, and I am very happy with my purchase.

We have a standard size in The Mats that has been designed to target one specific body part at a time, but if you want to use it from head to toe, you can use the two Mats by placing both vertically or in a T shape. Having read the various "ouch" cautionary notes, I was expecting to find my first experience of my Shakti mat (and complementary Shakti pillow) to be quite unpleasant at best. It was however a mild revelation. Aside from the initial internal debate about how best to approach the mat, which angle to take, to roll on sideways, or gingerly lower myself inch by inch, the reality was surprisingly painless. I took a few deep breaths when my skin first encountered the nobbly little spikes (yep, I went straight in with bare skin on my virgin voyage) but it didn't cause me any pain, just very mild discomfort initially. Within a short space of time, I had nodded off to sleep, perhaps only for a few minutes but I spent more than 20 minutes on the mat that first time.
The next time was a whole other chapter...within a few moments I was snoozing, and I woke more than an hour later...in all, I spent 1.5 hours on the mat during my second voyage.
Verdict: A blissful revelation. zzzzzzzzzzzz
